14ymedio biggerEFE/14ymedio, Havana, November 7, 2026 – Cuba and China signed three agreements to promote drug innovation, the development of diagnostic tests, and the establishment of a joint biopharmaceutical laboratory as part of a biotechnology cooperation forum between the two nations, state media reported Friday.

The meeting, held in the Chinese city of Shanghai, brought together businesspeople, academics, and industry representatives with the aim of establishing partnerships. Mayda Mauri Pérez, president of Cuba’s state-owned Group of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries, highlighted the organization’s interest in expanding the participation of Chinese partners in investment projects.

These projects are related to changing the energy matrix and incorporating artificial intelligence into different industrial processes, both administrative and those involving research and development, explained the executive of BioCubaFarma, which produces medicines, equipment, and high-tech services.

She also considered that this technology could help improve production processes, raise the quality standards of manufactured products, and strengthen clinical trial activities.

The state media report indicates that there are currently more than 30 Cuban-Chinese projects at various stages of research and development. Among the new initiatives is the creation of a joint research and development center, which will be the eleventh of its kind established in China with Cuban participation.

In recent years, biotechnology cooperation between the two nations has led to the creation of several joint ventures, laboratories, and joint research and development centers dedicated to scientific research projects, according to reports from institutions in the sector.

Havana and Beijing maintain close political and economic relations, with the Asian country standing out as one of the Island’s principal allies.
