14ymedio, Havana, 29 May 2019 — A woman worker at the Toricuba Meat Industry died on Tuesday after the explosion of a steam generator due to the increase in internal pressure in the Agroindustrial Company of Southern Grains of El Jíbaro, in the municipality of La Sierpe, in Sancti Spíritus.
Experts from the Ministry of the Interior in the province are now investigating the causes of the accident that led to the death of Maité Toledo Pérez, age 51.
Boris Luis Rodríguez, deputy director of the company, told the official Escambray newspaper that there have been no more victims, although there the material damages have yet to be quantified.
The Toricuba Base Business Unit is responsible for the slaughter of pork and beef for the production of meat products for both tourism and national food markets. It also deals with the production of spam, made from both meats, including a type of spam that is exported.
After a visit at the beginning of this year by Miguel Díaz-Canel to the Import and Export Company of Cítricos Caribe SA in Sancti Spíritus, the idea of exporting the spam produced by that industry was promoted. The Toricuba Meat Industry Base Business Unit was designated to prepare the sausage.
Figures from prior years record that in the first nine months of 2017 there were 51 deaths in Cuba in a work accident, a figure slightly lower than the 89 in 2016, according to official data from the newspaper Trabajadores (Workers).
